Award Announcement: Timuel D. Black Community Solidarity Scholarship

The Department of Race, Diaspora, and Indigeneity (RDI) is proud to announce the Timuel D. Black Community Solidarity Scholarship competition. The Timuel D. Black Community Solidarity Scholarship will be given to an outstanding University of Chicago undergraduate or graduate student who exemplifies Timuel Black’s spirit and commitments.

The designated scholar will receive an award of $5000 to pursue research and a community-engaged project that is aligned with the work and legacy of Timuel D. Black, civil rights activist, oral historian, and educator. Only students who will be officially enrolled at UChicago during the 24-25 academic year are eligible.

All interested and eligible student should send the application materials listed below to RDI, at racediasporaindigeneity@uchicago.edu. Applicants are encouraged to begin the process by familiarizing themselves with the incredible life and work of Timuel D. Black.

All the following materials must be submitted by Friday, March 15, 2024:

Unofficial UChicago transcript
Two letters of recommendation (sent directly to racediasporaindigeneity@uchicago.edu)
A 750-word statement of interest, outlining how your background, interests, and activities align with the legacy of Dr. Timuel Black, in particular, his commitment to social change, and his deep desire to strengthen the University’s connection to the South Side community.
A lesson plan or proposal for an event or activity that you consider illustrative of the work that you could do to fulfill the terms of the award.

Finalists for the scholarship will be invited to do a personal interview (by Zoom if necessary) with the scholarship committee.
