Timuel D. Black Community Solidarity Scholarship

The Department of Race, Diaspora, and Indigeneity (RDI) is proud to 
announce the Timuel D. Black Community Solidarity Scholarship competition. 

The Timuel D. Black Community Solidarity Scholarship will be given to an outstanding University of Chicago undergraduate or graduate 
student who exemplifies Timuel Black’s spirit and commitments. The designated scholar will receive an award of $5000 to pursue research and a community-engaged project that is aligned with the work and legacy of Timuel D. Black, civil rights activist, oral historian, and educator. Only students who will be officially enrolled at UChicago during the 25-26 academic year are eligible.

  • Unofficial UChicago transcript
  • Contact information for one faculty reference
  • A lesson plan or proposal for an event or activity. The scholarship is intended to support research and community-engaged projects aligned with the work and legacy of Timuel D. Black. Your statement should explain your proposed project, its community engagement, and how it aligns with Timuel D. Black’s work in civil rights activism, oral history, and/or education. Furthermore, you should include how you have prepared to conduct this project, be that through academic work, leadership or professional experience, community service, or other experience.

Finalists for the scholarship will be invited to do a personal interview (by Zoom if necessary) with the scholarship committee.
