MAPSS is a one-year program providing students with a broad foundation in interdisciplinary social science research while simultaneously allowing them to tailor their studies to their individual intellectual interests. Students receive training in anthropology, economics, history, political science, psychology, and/or sociology from world-class researchers at UChicago. The flexibility of the program attracts a diverse population of students with a wide range of backgrounds and personal and professional goals. MAPSS has been an integral part of the Division of the Social Sciences since its founding in 1934. For 90 years, our students have participated fully in the intellectual life of this interdisciplinary scholarly community.

The Dean’s Opportunity Scholarship and at least one of its recipients boasted some important firsts: The need-based scholarship itself was awarded for the first time ever, and Kennedy Patterson, one of 16 inaugural recipients and a student in the Master of Arts Program in Social Sciences, holds the distinction of being a first-generation college student.
